The
Canton Sailing Camp is designed for beginner, intermediate and advanced junior sailors. Campers begin by learning to sail the 9' Access Dinghies and, as they progress in their skills, the 18' Ideals and the 23' fixed-keel Sonars. Nautical vocabularly, sail trim, basic sailing manuevers and elements of racing constitute the instruction.
In addition to sailing and seamanship, new activities have been added to broaden the camp experience.
These include:
Navigation
Instruction starts in the classroom with basic charter reading, use of the handbearing compass and GPS operation. Soon this knowledge is put to practical use on board. Advanced students will take an afternoon cruise in one of the cruising sailboats to get the feel of navigating in the open waters of the Bay.
Boat Building
Each team will be given a "mini boat kit" consisting of a plan, floats, rope and will be asked to plan the construction of a small boat. They will begin by choosing a team leader.
Upon construction completion, each team will launch their raft -- in a carefully controlled environment. The goal will be to paddle their raft a short distance within a slip. Safety is always of the highest priority.
Personal Development
Sailing is a team sport. By its nature it provides an ideal medium in which to teach and practice team and leadership skills. The basic elements are covered in the classroom but the real learning is best done in the boats. Leadership and team skills are observed by the counselor on board.
Ideally, campers will return in the follwing season to access their progress and to chart new courses.
We believe that some understanding of what characteristics an effective leader must have and how to establish oneself as a valuable team member is important at any age.
Fell's Point Pizza Party on Thursday
On Thursdays the campers sail their boats to Fell's Point, tie-up their boats and enjoy a pizza party in this historic sailing harbor (with a Getaway instructor on board). If the weather is not suitable the party is moved to our class-room.
Parents' Day on Friday
We hope you will join us on Friday to celebrate the graduation of your camper with a regatta and graduation ceremony. Your camper might even take you for a sailboat ride!

What to Bring:
The best
outfit for sailing is shorts, a top and tennis shoes (white soles)
or boat shoes. A hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and water bottle are
essential for those sun enriched days. Pack a lunch. We have
a refrigerator, water cooler and
a microwave in our classroom.

Baltimore's Downtown Skyline
forms the backdrop for a summer of water-borne fun! By the end of the camp, the young sailors will be fully versed in the workings of our fleet of small boats and the principles of sailing. While learning sail trim and boat handling, students participate in racing, games, treasure hunts and water fights! Safety is the very first thing we teach; but, our counselors make it all fun.
